When Gabriel, a messenger of God, came to Mary he said:

Luke 1:31″And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name Him Yeshua.

And again, a messenger of God appeared to Joseph, the man that Mary was Betrothed too, and said:Matthew 1:21″ She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Yeshua, for He will save His people from their sins.”

Read that: …you shall call His name Salvation, for He will save His people from their sins.

The letter “J” is new to all languages, it was introduced in the 1600’s.  Prior to that time Jesus was pronounced with a “Y” sound in front.  The English is a translation of the Greek which is transliterated “Ieesous”.  The Greek is a translation of the Hebrew.[1]  Most Israelis pronounce and spell the name as “Yeshu” and think of Yeshu as “the Christian God.”  However the name is properly spelled with the “a” (ayin) at the end.  As Yosef (Joseph, Mariam’s husband) was instructed, “You are to call His name “Yeshua,” for He will save His people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:21) In the English the name Jesus has no reference, in the Hebrew the word yoshia, based on the same root as the name Yeshua, means “he will save,” it explains everything.[2]

As Messianic Believers we prefer His given name Yeshua.
